Women and girls living on the isolated Buyiga Island, Uganda, face limited economic opportunities due to gender-based disadvantages and discrimination. Many resort to vulnerable activities like commercial sex or robbery to survive, exposing themselves to exploitation and health risks. There are also no hair salons on the island, and it’s expensive to travel to the mainland, so women either shave their heads, cover their hair or use paper scissors for hair cuts.

This project will enable women of Buyiga Island to enjoy the cultural practises of hairdressing.

To address these issues, local leader Abel Robert - who has set up multiple training and income generating activities for women on the island - plans to establish three hair salons in strategic locations on the island, and train 50 women to become hairdressers.

Over 6 months of training, participants will learn hairdressing techniques that meet the demands of local women and men, along with basic business skills. They’ll even learn how to make their own shampoo as it isn’t currently sold on the island.

In the process, three fully-fledged hair salons will be established where the budding hairdressers can practice their skills and start generating an income. Abel Robert has secured existing spaces in densely populated areas where women will pay $1 a month to rent their own working spaces. Others will be equipped to become mobile hairdressers, to provide flexible working conditions and reach customers in more remote areas.

Financially backing this project will help break the cycle of poverty on Buyiga Island. Women will be able to escape exploitation, improve their economic status, and contribute to their families and communities - while looking and feeling great!
