Malaria causes around 1 million deaths per year. 90% of those deaths are children under 5 in Sub-Saharan Africa. The pastoral Maasai people of Kenya constantly have to battle Malaria, but don’t have access to antimalarial medication due to high costs and inaccessibility. Maasai homes are traditionally made of mud and sticks, which makes it almost impossible to keep mosquitos out.

The most sustainable way to prevent malaria in Maasai tribes is by sleeping under mosquito nets. Large, quality mosquito nets will be provided to Maasai families with young children who are at high risk of contracting, and becoming severely ill with, malaria. Each net will cover a bed or mattress that fits 3 children.

Meet ELIZABETH

the PHYSIOTHERAPIST DETERMINED TO ENSURE EVERY CHILD RECEIVES PROPER HEALTH CARE

Elizabeth has worked as a physiotherapist for nearly 20 years in Kenya. Due to finding it too difficult to turn away children living with disabilities who were unable to pay her fees, she now provides free support to vulnerable families who have a child living with a disability. In addition to supporting children through treatment and diagnosis, Elizabeth trains parents on how they can meet their children’s needs and works with entire Maasai communities to help shift the current stigma facing children living with disabilities. During her visits to Maasai communities she learnt how vulnerable they are to malaria, so she now distributes mosquito nets to as many pastoral families as she can. Learn more.
