Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet it remains a significant challenge in many parts of the world, including Buyiga Island in Uganda. With limited access to clean water sources, many people on the island are forced to rely on untreated water from swamps and rivers, which can be contaminated with harmful bacteria and viruses. This challenge disproportionately affects women and girls, who are responsible for collecting water for their families. In addition to spending hours each day collecting contaminated water, girls often have to skip school and travel alone, leaving them at high risk of sexual assault.

To address these urgent challenges, local community leader Robert is coordinating the construction of boreholes in the most densely populated areas of the island. The boreholes, which are 30 meters deep, provide a sustainable source of clean drinking water for an average of 2,000 people, even during droughts. So far, two boreholes have been completed, resulting in an increase in school attendance, a reduction in hospital visits from water-borne diseases, and savings in time and money from not having to collect wood to boil swamp water, as the borehole water is drinkable straight from collection.

Funding a borehole for the people of Buyiga Island will provide a critical improvement to their health and wellbeing, as well as access to education and safety for girls.

The boreholes are 30m deep to ensure a sustainable source of clean water.
