Patrick's Story

Kampala, Uganda

There are an estimated 2.5 million children living across Uganda without parents. Many of these kids have lost their Mums and Dads through preventable diseases or a lack of food security and live a day-to-day existence on the streets of Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

Patrick lost his own parents at the age of 13 and was left to fend for himself and his 11 year old sister. Rather than dwell on his own tragic situation, Patrick made the decision to embrace his new role as head of his family. He has also since taken in a 6-month-old baby who had been abandoned in his community and now raises her as his own.

Through his experiences, Patrick has decided to dedicate his life to creating an environment where other Ugandan kids have access to food, education, healthcare and love, giving them the chance to break the cycle of poverty in Kampala.

Now, at the age of 27, Patrick runs a free nursery and primary school, which supports children who have lost their parents. The centre provides meals and a free education to over 250 of the most vulnerable children in his community.

With $836, Patrick can support 20 children at his school, providing them with a nutritious breakfast and lunch sourced from locally available ingredients each day for a year.
